Sometimes you have to choose the flooring for a home before the home is decorated: how to go about this. Choosing different kinds of flooring to go with your decor.

Usually, the color of the floors is chosen after the color of the walls is chosen. However, in many expensive houses, where beautiful custom designed flooring such as tile, marble and parquet is installed, the flooring material is an integral part of the original architectural design, frequently requiring that the color choice of these expensive materials be made early in the design process.

There may be some room for flexibility; for example, elaborate mosaic floors are used in limited areas and wood floorings are in natural colors that blend with any color scheme. Natural wood floorings even from the lightest to the darkest can blend with most color schemes and because of their tone become almost neutral with a strong color scheme. Some may even consider this a negative feature of wood flooring, since flooring can be considered such a strong feature of a room, combining the appearance of strength with the ability to blend into the background.

This is what makes the choice of flooring one of the most difficult in decorating a house. This may also explain why rooms that are decorated in lighter colors work better with hardwood flooring than rooms decorated in darker colors. A well installed wood floor should never be covered with another material; wood floors are clean, easy to care for, a good value and can complement almost any decorating theme. Yet, its very unobtrusiveness usually requires some additional treatment to give it some drama and carry through a certain style.

The best solution is a combination solution. that is. cover the flooring with a rug that reflects the decorating scheme of the room but. at the same time leaves enough of the beautiful natural feature of the wood flooring showing through. A few smaller rugs might achieve the same effect, depending on the size of the room and the placement of the furniture in the room.

The main idea is to make sure that the colors and decorating theme of the room is carried throughout on the floors, walls and furniture. If the room is very large. or the decorating theme requires a more luxuriant feel to it, more of the wood floor area will have to be covered. Bare wood floors convey a minimalist feel, so a room that is decorated in a luxurious style would need more of the wood covered.

The design and colors of the rug or rugs must complement the scheme of the entire room, but once that requirement is met, a great deal of variety can be added to the design without ruining the overall result.

The first step in any job is to make sure you have the proper tools available for the job. In addition, if you are enlarging the space the previous window is in, or if you are cutting a hole to make a completely new window, you will need two by fours as "cripple studs" and other framing that may be needed. Then you need to follow the steps to a proper installation:

1. Determine exactly how you want the window placed in the wall and remove the existing window. Using the measurements of the new window, draw the outline on the outside of the house. This will show you where you need to cut. With your circular saw, cut the required opening.

2. Build a frame for the new window. You may have to cut through existing studs and install a new header, sill, jack studs and cripple studs.

3. Put in support braces. Bay windows are usually pretty wide, so you need to use the number of braces accordingly. A five foot window, for example, will need at least two braces, a wider window three or more.

4. You will need an assistant to lift the window and set it in place. You balance the window on the support braces and slide it into the opening. Put in shims to level the window perfectly, and then anchor it in place by nailing it down.

5. Place the roof frame over the bay window and nail it into place. Insulation must be put in between the roof and the top of the bay window, using the insulating material of your choice. Attach the roof sheeting to the frame and then put down the roofing paper. Put in drip edges and flashing, then put shingles on the roof of the window.

6. Fill insulation around the bottom of the window between it and the wall of the house. Attach a skirt bottom that will serve to seal the window on the underneath.

7. All of the edges should be sealed with outdoor grade silicone caulking to keep the window airtight and waterproof.

This is the basic list of installation steps for a bay window. The steps have been abbreviated to give you an idea of what steps you need to be prepared for, but if you buy a preassembled window, it will include detailed step by step instructions. The best way to insure that you have a properly installed window is to follow these instructions to the letter. NO shortcuts! Your project will be faster and easier in the long run. I asked two friends to help with the project and that helped make the project go faster, especially since we have done projects together before. In one afternoon, we had removed the old window and put in the rough framing for the new window. We covered the hole with plywood for protection overnight, and started working early the next day. By the end of the second day, the window was in, including the roof and skirting. The following day I was able to seal up the outside and complete the interior trim.

Our prediction was true; we picked the ideal spot to install a bay window. It was a charming touch to the outside of the house, and on the inside of the house it was a conversation piece in the room. It definitely added character to the room and we know it will add to the resale value of the house, since this is a feature that has been shown to be very desired by home buyers.

Keith George writes:

With the growing interest in developing and designing patios into more than what they used to be, the variety of furniture for patios have also evolved and grown into a whole industry by itself. The growth of the patio furniture industry is further encouraged by the fact that many more americans spend time lazing around on their specifically designed patios. Wicker patio furniture is among the most beautiful and comfortable outdoor furniture available. It is a type of furniture that is in its own category.

Today, we can all enjoy the tranquility of water even if our "yards" are limited to a patio or balcony. Alfresco living is the new way to enjoy relaxing and entertaining. Many people enjoy being outdoors during his or her breaks from their work, and there are already very many offices and other facilities already equipped with their very own outdoor patio heaters.

There are aluminum or wood patio covers to protect against rain or sun. You may even want to find one made of the same wood as your furniture, if you have teak patio furniture or cedar patio furniture. They can be had to burn wood or propane, or you can go all out and have a pro install a gas line for you.

Wood is preferred by people who want a natural look gelling with landscaping or the interior of the house. If willing to experiment and build a patio cover, hammer out questions as to why you need a patio cover, for what purpose, whether it would be painted or made with wood, prefabricated aluminum or PVC, and if permission is required from state or city authorities.

For patio furniture do not sacrifice quality for a cheaper price tag. Teak has a lot of oil in it that acts as a natural preservative, so it does very well outdoors. Also, make sure that you take home the best-fitted, top quality enclosure you can. For example, a top quality enclosure would be able to withstand weather changes better than those of lower quality.

When it comes to plants in your patio, try to think of each plant, statue, plaque or other accent as having its own personality, and place them together in groups that allow them to relate to each other in pleasing and complementary ways; place two low flowering plants on either side of a larger fern, or place a small statue between a palm and a vine - the possibilities are endless and are only limited by your creativity and imagination. Even potted plants will not wilt from the hot sun. However, with patio tile and some strategically placed large potted plants I can not only smarten up the rear of the house, but I would also be able to have a beautiful low maintenance garden that would always look nice despite myself.

Do you have space enough for a pool? To help narrow down your choices in pool and patio furniture, consider the style of your pool and the patio that surrounds it. Although you might initially purchase a patio gazebo for the patio, because of the mobility and flexibility, you could easily take it down and move it to the pool area or beach for a party, to the middle of the backyard for a great place to eat, and so on. A good reason to choose an offset patio umbrella is that it can be used to shade anything, from a corner of your pool to the kids' sandbox.

Asphalt paving is the most common method of carving out our 'travel patterns' and 'pit stops' - more often pit stops (in the form of driveways) than any other. Technically, asphalt pavement is bituminous and crushed gravel or sand, but to a home owner - it's where we park our vehicles, stop to talk with the neighbor, or where our children jump rope or practice their roller skating skills before hitting the rink.

Yes - asphalt pavement can be much more than a driveway and that's why it's important that yours is built to last. A well-built asphalt pavement can last up to 30 years with minimal care - freeing you to worry about more important things like getting to work on time or quickly getting those perishable groceries in the house.

Problems with Alternative Driveway Materials

A damaged driveway is the last thing you want to fuss with when you need to travel here and there several times a day. But that's what you'll end up doing if you install a driveway with other materials, like concrete for example. Concrete is prone to periodic cracking as temperature changes in the weather occur and it just isn't as flexible as asphalt pavement is.

Other materials, such as sand, gravel, or dirt aren't reasonable options either. Because these materials are never secured to the ground, they can actually damage the vehicle that sits on top of them. Loose dirt, dust, and rocks can flatten tires and/or fly up into motors and cause all kinds of problems that are completely avoidable by installing an asphalt pavement driveway instead.

In fact, as part of the asphalt pavement installation, you contractor will completely remove loose dirt, dust, and rocks (topsoil) so that it's never an issue. This topsoil is replaced with a foundation that helps asphalt pavement stick to the ground and prevent debris from entering your vehicle.

Special Asphalt Pavement Considerations

In addition, your contractor may need to level the driveway in an effort to prevent and/or drain potential water collection. Water that's left to collect in a driveway will eventually erode the driveway or worse, drip and drain and find its way into your home or garage!

If you plan to store large heavy vehicles on your driveway, you should talk to your contractor about full-depth asphalt pavement. This kind of application combines asphalt pavement with liquid asphalt cement, and as a result, creates an even stronger bond between the asphalt pavement and the ground that it covers. This strong binding combination can safely hold weights that are heavier than the average car - even more than today's SUV's and Hummers!

Of course if you or someone in your home has special needs - and your driveway must be built in a way to accommodate for those needs (such as handicapped access for example), you should talk to your contractor about non-conventional designs. If your current driveway makes it difficult for you to get out and enter your home without complications, then you certainly have grounds for designing an entirely new asphalt pavement driveway.

Installing tile is a popular do it yourself project. You can learn how to install tile with a bit of effort and achieve results that will rival those of folks that do this for a living. You'll also save quite a bit of money.

Ceramic tile and the materials needed to install the tile are not prohibitively expensive. The materials are roughly inline with a similar sized carpet or vinyl job. It's the cost of labor that makes installing tile so much more expensive.

The funny thing is, that installing tile is usually much easier for the typical do it yourselfer to master. With proper planning and a bit of thought you can learn how to install tile and have that new kitchen floor or countertop that you have always wanted.

In this article, we'll take a look at how to get ready to install your tiles.

First, let's consider which adhesive to use for your project. Typically you'll go down to your friendly Home Depot and buy a few bags of powdery stuff called "Thinset Mortar" This is what you mix up and spread on the floor or surface with a specially notched trowel. Then you set your tiles into this bed of mortar.

It's important that you pick the correct mortar for your particular job. For instance the adhesive you would want for a bathroom backsplash would be different than the thinset you would choose for your foyer.

Another part of the job you'll want to consider is which type of grouting to use. Yes, there are several variations of grout also. So, you'll need to be sure and choose the appropriate one for your job.

Another important part of learning how to install tile is learning how to estimate how much material you will need for your project. You'll need to figure out just how many bags of thinset and grout you will need. You'll need to calculate how many tiles it will take to do your tile installation. Be sure to add at least ten percent additional tile for those you mess up.

As you can see there is a lot to consider as you learn how to install tile. Randy Davis has a comprehensive video series that walks you through the process.

IN THE KITCHEN>>>

When looking to redecorate your kitchen you first have to decide want kind of kitchen decorating style you should go for. Certainly the choices that are now available will leave you baffled and bewildered but by remembering a few things about the kitchen the choice you make will be the right one for you. After the bathroom the kitchen is the most important room in any house and it should also be remembered that after the entrance hall to your home the kitchen has the most foot traffic occurring in it.

Below are provided a number of the more popular styles of kitchen that can be considered if you happen to be planning a remodeling or revamping of your current kitchen. It is also an idea to carry out some research as well by looking in house and home magazines, visiting kitchen showrooms, DIY stores, Kitchen Websites or even looking at your family and friends homes to see if they have a style that you like.

1. Country Style - Often called Early American or Colonial as it is designed to create a lovely quaint farm style kitchen. Often such kitchens will feature open shelves, pot racks and have the feeling of it being well lived in. Such kitchens are usually accented by the various colour schemes relating to the actual cabinetry of the units.

2. Contemporary - More and more often this style is being used because of its clean and simple lines. Often the cabinets are quite futuristic looking have no carvings or ornate features on them. With this style of kitchen the emphasis is put more on style and practical sophistication rather than beauty and that warm lived in feel.

3. Shaker - A simple and utilitarian style of kitchen that has flat panel doors, wooden countertops and brass handles (hardware).

4. French Country - Such kitchen designs based on this style are warm and inviting with lots of wood and soft colours being used. Not only do natural materials feature heavily in this style of kitchen, but you will find that the furniture used is large and rather ornate.

5. Arts and Crafts - Yet again another style of kitchen decoration which is becoming more popular because of the use of feature glass doors and natural wood tones which are finished off in a matt sheen effect. Certainly with this style of kitchen decoration there is the chance for you to be a little bit more artistic and creative in the design.

However, it is important when choosing a theme for you kitchen that you look at the designs and styles of the other rooms in your home to ensure that it fits in with the overall scheme of your home.

The smell of sawdust is in the air! Maybe you want to fix up your home so you can sell it in a couple of years. Or maybe you just want a comfortable new addition to your permanent home. In either case, remodeling your home is certainly a good idea--especially now when real estate and cold weather temperatures are rising steadily. But what should you do? Hmm, good question--you're not quite sure on how to get started. You just know it's time for a remodeling. No questions asked! Here are some ideas organized into two categories.

Unique Ideas For Remodeling

Where might you find some unique ideas for remodeling your home? Aside from watching television shows, you can subscribe to home remodeling magazines or purchase books for your ideas. These information sources will not only give you ideas; they will also show you step-by-step how to began and finish the project. Other unique ideas you can find by attending a home improvement expo locally, or even consulting "virtual expos" on the web. Many Internet companies as well as big name retailers like Sears, The Home Depot, or Lowe's remodeling center can offer remodeling ideas online. Some luxurious remodeling ideas for a home might include adding a swimming pool, adding a sunroom or remodeling your office to accommodate more appliances.

Practical Trends For Remodeling

However, not all luxury remodeling ideas will be a good investment. If you're looking at real estate value, or are simply thinking of selling your home in a few years, then it might be best to look for more practical ideas that will make the market value on your home rise. Some practical remodeling ideas that always improve a house's value include adding a second story, improving the siding, and doing some minor repairs on the kitchen and bathroom. Adding another bathroom or bedroom is always a smart move to increase the value of a modest home.

Count The Cost - Get Financial Advice for Your Remodel

But before you start demolishing toilets and taking down walls, be sure and count the cost. While doing your own planning and using a calculator to estimate is a good idea in the beginning stages, when you're serious about investing money it's best to contact a professional contractor--even if you plan on doing it all alone. They can offer advice and tell you if your expectations are realistic.

Have fun this season and always starting remodeling with a short term and long-term goal in mind.

Many of the old houses employ hardwood flooring. The use of hardwood for floors was popularized in the circa 1960s. Today, there is a resurgence of hardwood floors because people find these floors to be very relaxing to the eye. Hardwood floors are very attractive because of their natural look.

For people who purchased an old house with withered hardwood flooring, they would probably want to look into refinishing the flooring. Carpets cannot hide the hideous truth forever, and at some point, these homeowners need to refinish the flooring. A bad hardwood floor can literally ruin the whole theme of the house therefore lowering its value.

Refinishing a hardwood flooring is a great idea. Yes, it is a great idea indeed and that is why professional refinishers of hardwood floors charge exorbitant fees to their clients. These clients can't do anything but to succumb to the demands of the contractors because they don't have the know-how of proper hardwood refinishing.

Given the proper know-how and techniques for hardwood refinishing, homeowners can be liberated from the financial burden of paying professional contractors to refinish their hardwood flooring. If one is able-bodied and can follow simple instructions, then there would be no reason at all why he can't refinish the flooring himself.

Let's take a look at the pertinent steps that one needs to do to be able to successfully refinish his hardwood flooring.

1) Do the preparatory stuff

Before engaging into sanding the floor or being too excited and buying all the necessary equipment and tools for the refinishing process, one needs to lay down the foundations and do the preparatory steps in the process.

First, one needs to decide what look he would want to give his hardwood floor. There should be a design and color scheme plan that should be laid out before one starts to sand. Knowing what one really wants is as important as doing the process properly. This is to ensure that he knows what he would want to do so that he knows how he can achieve his desired look.

After the plans have been laid out, make sure that all the furniture and other things in the room are taken out and stored properly.

2) Take out the nails

Sanding is perhaps one of the most important steps in the whole process of refinishing a hardwood floor, but don't get too excited yet. Before sanding, make sure that all the nails in the hardwood. The nails need to be taken out because they will eventually damage the sand paper or the sanding discs and perhaps one's hands if they are not taken out. The holes that are left by the nails should be filled with wood fillers that are of the same color as that of the wood.

3) Sand, sand, sand!

If the area of the flooring is not too big, then one can actually sand the floor manually (by hand). But if one deems that there is a need to use an electric sander, then he has two options: one is to buy a new one, the other is to rent. One can buy a pretty decent hardwood floor sander for under 100 US dollars. This can be seen as a good investment, but it really depends on how frequently it will be used. One can also choose to rent a sander from the local home depot or borrow from his neighbor.

One should sand the floor at least 3 times. The first should be made with a heavier grit and the grit level goes down each time. This will ensure that the wax and the coating will be removed thoroughly.

4) Stain the floor

Try to get the correct color that you would want to apply to your hardwood floor and test it in a small wood plank that is similar to the wood that is used in the flooring. Make sure that the stain is applied equally to the floor.

5) Refinish

Refinish with a polyurethane finish. Make sure that the container is stirred and not shaken to prevent bubbles from forming. Apply the solution equally throughout the flooring and wait for it to dry. It usually takes about 3 hours for the solution to dry.

Refinishing your own hardwood flooring is not an impossible task. One only needs the right materials and the right implementation of his plans to be able to successfully refinish such floors.

GET OUT OF THE GUTTER... okay that was not as funny as I thought...

Although a home's gutters are not a selling point or even an attraction, they are quite necessary for your home and play a major role in damage reduction and roofing integrity. An old, leaking gutter can cause water to pour off your roof at an inopportune location, thoroughly soaking the ground beneath and seeping into any subterranean living space. Basements that are constantly soaked are a playground for various kinds of mold to grow and thrive. Yes, gutters are an important aspect of the home to keep in tip-top shape.

Most of the gutters on the market today are made from copper, vinyl, steel, or aluminum. Each of these materials have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Copper gutters can be a bit on the costly side, but are very durable, require little by way of maintenance, and resist corrosion well. Copper will also start out light colored, eventually get darker, then fade while becoming green. Depending on the homeowner, this is either charming or an eyesore that prevents them from going copper. For those that still want a copper gutter system but do not want to experience the visual imagery of copper oxidation, there are different copper sealant products that can be purchased and used to help preserve the original color.

A vinyl gutter is lightweight and easy to install. They are also unaffected by most weather conditions, don't require much by way of maintenance, and are an economical solution. Vinyl gutters can also be purchased in a wide spectrum of colors which may be a draw to those that shy away from the traditional white guttered roof. The only drawback to vinyl gutters is their weakness to extremes in temperature. Periods of extreme hot or extreme cold can result in the loss of a gutter's structural integrity, result in warping and/or other forms of deterioration.

Steel gutters are significantly stronger than other types of gutter systems and not affected by an adverse environment. As a result, many people opt to spend a little extra and install steel gutters. Among all the good things that can be said about the sturdiness and reliability of a steel gutter, keep in mind that steel gutters will rust if not treated periodically.

Aluminum gutters are lightweight and usually easy to install. While not as strong as a steel gutter, aluminum gutters are still fairly durable and hold up to weather conditions as well as a vinyl gutter will. Aluminum gutter systems are also more affordable than some others and as such are used quite commonly. Like a steel gutter however, aluminum gutters do require some maintenance to keep them element-resistant.

While selecting a gutter may not be the most visually thrilling aspect of home improvement, it is a very necessary one that can save you lots of headaches down the road. With this in mind, selecting the gutter that is right for your home and wallet should not be overlooked.

Concrete Flooring

Concrete, it's practical, sturdy and has been used in the construction of buildings since the early Roman times. However, without a decorative or protective coating most concrete patios, driveways, walkways and garage floors are unattractive. In fact, more than likely, they're stained, drab, dull, possibly, even ugly.

Today many homeowners and do-it-yourselfers are discovering, through the use of Top Secret Coatings concrete coatings, those gray, cold outdoor slabs can take on a unique, stylish look that not only reflects homeowners particular tastes but are non skid, add color and texture to a new or older home.

A porch or patio can be one of the most useful exterior areas of your home if covered with an attractive concrete coating, cleared of all excess junk and with a little thought given to landscaping the area. Unfortunately these spaces are all too often covered with bland concrete which as well as looking rather dull and dreary, may have developed cracks or become stained with moss, grease, oil etc over time.

Restoring such areas to a place you would be proud to use for entertaining, outdoor dining or just relaxing may seem like a mighty big job. If the concrete is badly cracked and the surface uneven, generally there is no other choice than to rip it up and re-lay it. Here are a few thoughts to consider before moving forward with your plans to apply concrete coatings.

If your floor is inside the house, do a little checking before you decide to coat your floor. Is the concrete damp? Is there any ponding water? (If so, then you have a larger problem than an ugly floor!) Let the concrete dry thoroughly before painting (this may take a while during the wet seasons!)

Thoroughly clean the concrete with TS 695 Rynolite Etching Cleaner. If there is any grease on the floor you will want to remove it before painting or the paint may not adhere. To remove grease, put down cat litter to absorb the majority of oil, then scrub again with TS 695 Rynolite Etching Cleaner. Rinse well and wait until the floor is thoroughly dry.

Sand off any loose or peeling paint or other residue with a sander or 80 grit sandpaper. Vacuum or sweep up the residue. Then go over the floor with a tack cloth (a sticky cheesecloth available at any hardware or home improvement store).

Use a paintable cement filler to repair any cracks and holes and allow it to dry completely before moving forward.

Now to begin the painting process. You will want to brush the edges and roll the rest of the floor surface. Let each coat dry between 12 and 24 hours before recoating. Repeat the process with the second or third coats as directed.

Wood Working Tips

One of the most important things for the novice wood worker who wants to make this a permanent hobby, is to keep your tools clean and in good repair. If you use dull or rusted tools, you work will turn out sloppy and you will most likely not want to continue to fine tune your skills. Orderliness and carefulness, with knowledge and patience, are sure to bring good results, just as a lack of them will bring failure.

Good workers take pride in keeping their workbenches in good order as well. Tools that are not in immediate use should be placed in their racks so they will not be damaged or cause injury to the worker. If the business end of the tool is touched, it should be wiped off to prevent corrosion.

Now that you know how to take care of your tools, let`s put them to work. But what should you make? A custom picture frame is a good thing for the beginning woodworker and will also make a nice gift for that special someone.

The first thing is to determine what size you want your woodworking project to be. Be sure that the inside or a hole` is the size of the picture. If you plan on putting a picture in the frame, the outside edges need to be bigger than that.

Now, for the material to be used in your woodworking project. Since you are doing a picture frame, you can use just about any wood you would like, whether it is picture frame molding that can be bought at local craft stores, builders molding or even just lumber from the lumber yard. The latter you can pick up at your favorite home improvement store.

For the beginner or the more advanced woodworker, picture frame molding may be the best choice as it comes with the grove for the glass already cut. With the other two options, you will have to do this groove yourself with a router.

After you have your material and sharp, clean tools, you are ready to start your woodworking project. Now, using a hand saw, cut the material four lengths, one for each side. Cut the edges at a forty five degree angle be sure you measure for this when cutting. Now, lay them on a flat surface and arrange the pieces so they form the shape of the frame that you want. Now, join the corners using wood glue and corner clamps. This is done easily by applying the wood glue to the cut edges, then using the corner clamps to keep them tight while the glue is drying.

The next step is to turn the woodworking project over so it is upside down and put two V nails through the glued joints. This will give the frame more sturdiness for longer a longer shelf life.

Now, just let it finish drying overnight. In the morning, you can do any sanding and staining that you want.

Of course, this is an example of a basic woodworking project. With time and practice, you will get to the level of making chairs, coffee tables, beds and dressers.

Sand from Interstate 70 is moving into Gore Creek, smothering bugs and fish in Vail Village's picture-postcard mountain stream.

The U.S. Forest Service found that - compared to nearby pristine creeks - Gore Creek had less bugs and shallower water because of the sand, which is covering rocks where fish and bugs lay eggs, and filling pools the fish need to survive, said Brian Healy, biologist for the Forest Service.

These critters - and the Gore Creek in general - are needed to sustain Vail's economy, which depends in part on kayaking, fishing and snowmaking, said Caroline Bradford, director of the Eagle River Watershed Council, an Avon-based environmental group.

The sand has moved from the interstate to Black Gore Creek, which flows down Vail Pass, and now into Gore Creek. The Colorado Department of Transportation applies 15,000 tons or more of the I-70 over Vail Pass to try to keep the road from freezing, Bradford said.

"There's just sand, so much sand in the (Black Gore Creek)," Bradford said.

While groups fighting the sand - including the Forest Service, Watershed Council and others - understand sand is necessary for highway safety, the groups hope to stop it from reaching Gore Creek, she said.

The groups built above- and below-ground basins in recent years to collect sand running off the interstate. The basins work well when sand is removed, but Black Gore Creek is filled with sand that piled up before the basins were built.

The goal is to create another collection basin on Black Gore Creek near mile marker 183 to prevent the sand from reaching Gore Creek, which merges with the Black Gore just a short distance downstream from the proposed basin.

"There's more ecological bang for the buck there than another small basin," Bradford said.

RiverRestoration.org - a waterway restoration group - is determining the amount of sand the Gore Creek can handle and still remain healthy. The Watershed Council plans to ask the Department of Transportation to remove whatever amount of sand the stream cannot handle from the proposed basin at mile marker 183, Bradford said.

The excessive sand would be removed each year from the basin, which used to be a pond before it filled with sand, Bradford said.

While roadway sand is the largest contributor of sediment to the Gore Creek basin surrounding Vail, other sources of pollution exist.

Dirt and sand wash into Red Sandstone Creek, another Gore Creek tributary, from the mass of roads in the area and poorly constructed ski runs on the front side of Vail Mountain slide into the water system, Healy said.

The sediment from Vail construction projects also often ends up in Gore Creek, Bradford said.

The Forest Service plans to continue monitoring the creeks in the basin, while RiverRestoration.org should determine in the coming months how much sand Gore Creek can endure.

There's no better feeling than being at home. Here, you can enjoy doing the things you love while being comfortable at your own pace and space. But, how can you enjoy ultimate comfort in your own abode when your home needs fixing and improvement?

D-I-Y OR PRO?

If you would want to do some improvements in your home, the first thing you should consider is whether you can do the fixing all by yourself or you need the services of a professional home fixer.

If you are planning to do it on your own, there are actually many references you can use. Aside from magazines, websites are also available in the Internet that designed for those who prefer to the task by themselves.

But, better make sure that you are indeed prepared to these tasks of home improvement because it is hard to keep everything hanging when you no longer have the drive to finish what you have started. Before trying on any big projects like remodeling any part of the house, changing wall papers, buying a new set of appliances, or renovation of windows, rooms, and even gardens, ask yourself first if you can dedicated a lot of time because these changes will require many of it.

For you to know if you are ready in doing drastic home improvements, try repairing small things or do modest installations. If you think you and your partner can handle bigger projects than these modest tasks, then you can start doing major renovations. By doing the renovation yourself, you can save more money because you won't have to pay a pro.

Hiring the services of a professional is needed if you are the type of homeowner who is only interested in planning the project and doing the finishing touches afterwards. Usually, professionals charge high rates because they can assure you that the job can be finished faster, more accurate and more reliable. Since these people are experts in home improvement, they can guarantee you that the work will be done precisely.

But, before you hire a contractor, make sure that you have set all the records and terms straight. Make sure that the pro knows what you want them to do and when do you want them to finish. Also make sure that you established a clear division between your work and the contractor's.

BASIC HOME IMPROVEMENT

If you are planning to do some home improvement, familiarize yourself what are the aspects that might need renovation or fixing.

1. Electrical safety. This is one of the basic concerns of any household. Double check if your electrical wirings are all intact and check if there's a need for a repair. To ensure safety, try developing a simple home electrical safety to minimize the possibility of accidents due to faulty wirings and the like. 2. Hardware. Maybe it's now time to check if all your cabinets in the kitchen, bedroom, garage, and storage are all okay. Who knows, these cabinets need changing of nuts, bolts, nails, screening, etc? If you want to fix these yourself, you can look for the things you might need in home hardwares found at home centers.

3. Windows and doors. Windows and doors are indeed wonderful decorations to your home. If you want to recreate your windows, try adding flower boxes for a change.

4. Wallpaper and borders. Bored of your old wallpapers and borders? Then, you can now renovate these to turn your room into a unique room. You can find discounted wallpaper and borders almost anywhere but make sure they are high-quality so you can use them for a long period of time.

5. Outdoor projects. Look around your garden if it needs updating or repair. You may also want to change the theme of your garden to make it look more refreshing.

Home improvement may also include storage and garage, metal roofing, house plans, deck designs, patios, fences, appliances, craft projects, and bathroom fixtures and furniture.

Cabinets are one of the most important aspects of any kitchen. Quality cabinets can increase a the selling value of a home, while poorly constructed ones can detract from not only the value of a home but also the beauty and efficiency of a kitchen. In this article you'll learn more about the different types of cabinets, as well as what to do if the cabinets in your kitchen are less than ideal.

There are many different types of cabinets, made out of many different types of materials. The most popular material is, of course, wood. The least expensive type of woods that cabinets are sometimes crafted from include choices like poplar, birch and maple. If you go with one of these woods, you will probably want to paint your cabinets. Some homeowners choose to go with designer effects like faux finishing to give lower grades of wood a classic and sophisticated look. A step up from these low grade woods would be choices like oak and pine -- durable woods that are fairly affordable.

Looking to spend a bit more for high quality wood? Then you should consider woods such as maple, cherry, or hickory. Which one is best for you depends on your personal preferences and what you feel looks best in your kitchen. Now, if you're looking for a cabinet material that's truly spectacular, you could go with expensive choices like mahogany, walnut or ebony. Not only are these woods exotic and attractive, they're durable and long-lasting.

Just as there are lots of various woods cabinets can be crafted from, there are also various types of cabinetry to suit every price range and preference. Stock cabinetry is the most affordable type of cabinetry, however you won't have a lot to choose from as far as design is concerned. These types of cabinets are made in large quantities in a factory. The next step up from stock cabinetry is semi-custom cabinetry. While these are also factory made, you are given more choices in the size, material and finish of your cabinets. The third, and most expensive type of cabinets are custom cabinets. Custom cabinets are crafted especially for you and meet your every specification and need from start to finish. This type of cabinetry takes longer to build and costs a lot more than the other two options, but can be worth the time and expense.

Maybe you're a homeowner who has cabinets that are less than satisfactory. If so, there are two choices available to you. You can have your existing cabinets removed and replaced or you can simply refinish your cabinets. Which option you choose will have a lot to do with your kitchen storage needs and the quality of your cabinets. If your cabinets are crafted from a low-quality wood and you would prefer a higher grade, then replacement is probably your best bet. If your cabinets do not provide you with the storage space you need, this may be another reason to replace. However, if your existing cabinets are made from an acceptable wood and provide you with enough storage, then refinishing, also known as refacing, might be the way to go.

Refinishing your cabinets is something you can hire a contractor to do, or handle yourself. The first step is to remove your cabinet doors and all hardware, then label the inside of each door with a sticky note. The reason for labeling is so that it will be easy to replace your cabinets when you're done refinishing. After you've labeled everything and removed all the hardware, it's time to remove the finish from the cabinet doors. This can be achieved with a varnish removal product purchased from your local home improvement store. These products can be quite toxic so always be sure to wear proper safety equipment like goggles and gloves. Also, it's crucial to ventilate the room with plenty of fresh air. If you can, doing the work outdoors is an even safer option.

After the varnish remover has done its job, rinse the wood clean and let it dry. Once dry, sand the cabinets to a smooth finish, then brush away all excess sanding dust. You might want to start with a coarse sandpaper to smooth rough areas and finish with a finer grade for an even finish. After the sanding is complete, you can apply the stain or varnish of your choice. If you use more than one coat, allow each coat to dry before adding another. Make sure the stain is completely dry before touching the cabinets. Once you're sure the cabinets are fully dry, you can reinstall them in your kitchen. To give them a shiny new look, replace your old hardware with new hardware.

No matter what type of kitchen you have, good cabinetry is a must. Not only can the right cabinets add to the look of the room, they can give you all the space you need for storing your kitchen related items. If you ever sell your home, you can be sure that prospective buyers are going to examine the kitchen cabinets! With that in mind, take a good look at your existing cabinetry. Is it all you think it should be? If not, there are many options available to you. For ideas, check out some books on the subject or flip through some home improvement magazines. Even a leisurely trip to your local home improvement store can be enough to get you thinking about the upgrades you want to make to your cabinets. Whether you do the work yourself or hire someone to do it for you, you'll find that the end result is definitely worth the time and expense!

WHY HARDWOOD FLOORS??

Many people choose hardwood flooring because it is easy to maintain and keep looking great. True, you will not have to worry about hardwood staining if you spill grape juice on it, as you do with carpet. However, there are a few things that you need to remember when you are dealing with hardwood. Once you have spent a great deal of time and money on your beautiful hardwood floor, you will want to keep it looking fantastic. Many people choose hardwood flooring because it is easy to maintain and keep looking great. True, you will not have to worry about hardwood staining if you spill grape juice on it, as you do with carpet. However, there are a few things that you need to remember when you are dealing with hardwood.

1) The most important cleaning tip for hardwood is preventative maintenance. By cleaning your floors regularly and sweeping or vacuuming dirt and debris, you will save yourself a lot of time and expense in the long run.

2) Wipe up any spills as soon as they occur. Although you will not have an instant stain when you spill on hardwood floor as you do with carpet, you may expose your hardwood to staining if you do not wipe up spills in a timely fashion. Once stains have a chance to set into the hardwood you may have to refinish the floor in order to get the stain out.

3) Sweep your floor everyday or as needed. It is important to sweep up any dirt or debris off of your floor as necessary so that the dirt doesn't scratch the wood. This will vary from house to house of course. If you have a high traffic home, you may need to sweep a few times a day. Although, you may only need to sweep every few days.

4) Use a hardwood cleaner once a week to keep your floor looking its best. Hardwood floor cleaners are available at any home improvement center or at a flooring center. They are quite easy to use, and with a little preventative maintenance, you will thank yourself in the future. Simply spray the cleaner on and use a cloth or hardwood broom to buff the floor gently.

5) Never use water and soap when cleaning your hardwood. Hardwood is not like linoleum or even laminate flooring and you cannot use a bucket of sudsy, soapy water to clean it. In fact, you can damage your floor if you try to mop it in a traditional style. Because wood is susceptible to water damage, you want to minimize the contact that your floor has with water. Water will seep into the cracks of the boards and can cause swelling, discoloration and deformation of the boards.

6) Protect your floor from furniture scratches and gouges. It is a very good idea to place felt on the bottom of all of your furniture in order to protect it from scratches. This is particularly important for furniture pieces that move a great deal such as your kitchen chairs. But it is a good idea to protect all pieces equally. You can purchase felt at the local hardware store, and cut it to size to fit the bottom of every piece of furniture that you have.

7) Polish your floor regularly. If you have a hardwood floor with a wax finish, you may want to wax it on a regular basis to keep it looking shiny and new. The waxing process will also will also help buff any scratches out of your floor as well. Every wax product is different so it is important to read the directions carefully and also consult the manufactures guidelines of your flooring before applying any wax product.

With a little bit of preventative maintenance and some common sense, you will be able to keep your hardwood floor looking fabulous for many years. There are only a few simple steps and rules to follow when dealing with hardwood flooring because it is actually one of the easiest flooring types to care for.

There are a few things you need to consider when you are shopping for window locks for your home. It isn't as easy as it may sound. You want a lock that gives you the desired level of security, but you also want to make sure it goes with the décor of your home, and you do not want to break the bank in obtaining them.

It will improve the appearance of your home and give added protection. But you have to pick the right lock for each window in each room. You do not want to scrimp on an item like this. It is more important to get good quality that will work for protection than worrying about style. You can get both if you shop around and are knoweldgeable about what you need.

Quality in locks can vary greatly, so make sure you get your locks from a well respected lock manufacturer. You may be able to get some advice from the police.

Saving Money on Home Improvements:

You may be looking outside at the wind and rain (and maybe even snow) and wondering who does home improvement projects in the winter? The short answer is people who want to save money.

Summer is the busiest time of year for remodeling and other house projects, but there are many things you can have done in spring, autumn, and even winter. And guess what? You'll save money because contractors are less busy this time of year, and they're often eager to cut deals in order to get some business.

It's true that some projects are best done in the warm, dry days of summer, but there are lots of home improvements you can do "out of season" without trouble. Let's take a look at a few of them.

If you're looking for a few winter projects, this is a good time of year to remodel the kitchen or bathroom. Since these are done entirely indoors, weather does not make a difference. Busy during the time leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas (as customers are eager to get their houses ready for the holidays), design and remodeling professionals often experience a lull in late December and January. This is a great time to contact them, because they'll be eager to get business going in the new year. You may even be able to negotiate for a 10% discount. Also, kitchen appliances often go on sale late in the year, so this may be a good time to buy that stainless steel refrigerator and oven you've been drooling over.

Another home improvement project you can tackle in the winter is landscaping. Because the trees are bare and the bushes are flower-free, most people don't think about landscaping this time of year. That makes it the perfect time to contact a landscape architect, designer, or contractor. Again, you may be able to negotiate deals for work done in the off seasons, and pruning fruit trees is easier when the leaves are on the ground. In addition, this is a good time of year to eradicate pest plants and weeds.

If you're looking forward toward the spring, a good home improvement project for that time of year is replacing the roof. Roofing companies are busy during the summer, which is the peak season, and can afford to charge a premium for their work. But if you can find a dry week in the spring, you won't be charged high prices and you won't have to wait for the roofer to have an opening in a busy schedule.

You can also pour concrete in the spring if you've been thinking about a patio or new walkway. Concrete actually likes water, using it as fuel for the curing process, so a damp overcast (but not rainy) spring day is great for pouring a driveway or patio. Pouring concrete in the spring also means the slab will have a long time to cure before winter brings freezing temperatures.

If you're looking ahead to home improvement projects for next fall, you could schedule exterior house painting for then. Painting in the rain isn't a good idea, but that doesn't mean you can paint only in the summer (high temperatures and direct sunlight can actually dry the paint before it has had a chance to bond properly to the surface). Save money on getting your house painted by asking the contractor to treat your home as a fill-in job, one he or she works on in bits and pieces between other projects. The contractor may be able to offer a discount, as this keeps the crew busy during days they'd otherwise have no work.

These are just a few home improvement projects that you can save money on by scheduling them in the off season. Be willing to think outside the box, and you can get some great deals on renovating your home.

Home owners who wish to add to their enjoyment of their home or to increase its market value always consider home improvement projects. Many find, though, that they cannot save the money that they will need to get the project done. One way to finance the project that will add that extra spark to your living area is to take out a home improvement loan.

These loans can be used for many different areas, including putting in a new pool, remodeling a kitchen (including updating and decorating) and in upgrading your bathrooms. This type of loan is always secured, which means that collateral is required. Many people use the equity on their home at the time to the improvement as the collateral to secure the loan. Many projects will also qualify fora tax deduction, although in order for this to be approved the improvement has to be on the primary residence of the applicant, and not on pleasure property such as a cabin, a vacation home, or on any property that is being rented.

When you think of loan, the first thing to get settled is the question of interest rates. Fortunately for home improvement people, the interest on this type of borrowed money typically operates with a lower interest rate than other secure loans. The reasoning behind this is that this type of loan is not as risky as others as it enhances the home which is already being paid for on a regular basis. In order to qualify for a HIL, the applicant must own the residence or be making payments on it.

The most common and popular forms of home improvement are projects designed to improve bathrooms and kitchens, the areas that buyers will pay the most attention to when shopping. Some other areas where people upgrade their houses are adding a new roof, building a garage or fence, or digging a swimming pool. There are two categories of home improvement loan: FHA Title I loans and the traditional type of loan for household upgrades.

Traditional type loans ask that the borrower have a large percentage rate of equity on the home that they own, usually the figure is at or above 20 percent. This equity, and the additional equity that is created with the improvement, is what acts as the collateral on the home. The loan is secured by taking a lien.

The length of the loan is varied, although it will usually be less than ten years. In some cases, though, lenders will allow up to fifteen years for repayment, but this depends on how much money is borrowed. The interest that is paid on the loan is tax deductible. The FHA loans are administered by the government and are created to help borrowers improve their homes. This program typically is applied just to items that are not considered luxury; in other words, an FHA will not be approved for an owner who wants to build a pool. This type of borrowing program also asks for no collateral equity, as it is intended for people who may otherwise have trouble securing a loan. The repayment period is usually much longer than the traditional loan, and those with bad credit history who have undergone credit repair may have an option under this program. When a loan request is under $7500, the lender will not take a lien on the home, but the interest paid is still deductible come tax time.

Many communities will offer special programs as incentives to first item home buyers, to encourage them to get in the market and pay taxes! These offers are great to get you into the market, and often provide some assistance to those considering buying their first home. IN order to ensure that you get the best program possible, there are some things to keep in mind. The business offering the program whoud have a longstanding history with the community. Always make sure to find out the fine print involved in one of these programs, and look for lower down payments, reduced closing costs, and reduced finance rates. Education portions in the program are always a key deciding factor.
